Dr. William J. Clancey is Chief Scientist, Human-Centered Computing, in the Intelligent Systems Division of NASA Ames Research Center. He leads the multidisciplinary group of computer and social scientists, “Work Systems Design and Evaluation,” which emphasizes participant observation, work practice simulation, and partnership projects. Clancey has participated in ten Mars mission simulations in the Canadian Arctic, Utah, and Arizona, studying how scientists explore a new terrain and how to make crews more self-sufficient. Clancey has studied Mars Exploration Rover and Phoenix science operations and is writing a book about how using a robotic laboratory changes the nature of field science.
